![]() The people of Ayodhya lit lamps in their homes to welcome their king, celebrate his victory in battle and honour the safe return of their queen. In the battle, Lord Rama claimed victory after being helped by Lord Hanuman and his army of monkeys. This was after he battled and overcame the demon kind of Ceylon, Ravana, who had abducted Sita. It is believed that tomorrow evening, deemed the darkest night of the year, Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita, returned to his hometown, Ayodhya after 14 long years of exile in the forest. Like those Diwali holidays from the ’80s, tomorrow brings to us to another dazzling festival of lights, just like it has been for centuries. In those days, I had no awareness of skin colour or hair texture and what those differences meant.Īll I knew Romila was the girl who lived next door who invited me to her houses every Diwali. The second is spending Diwali evenings with members of her family and of course, going to town with barfi, ladoo, gulab jamun and my all-time favourite, halwa. ![]() The first is, she taught me how to play gilli danda which we often played in their compound after school. While I can’t recall her surname or where she went to school after I left to live in our family estate on Qamea Island, I can remember two things clearly. She was my neighbour and we celebrated three Diwali holidays together. I can’t wait for sundown to see lights of all colours emerge and bring life in our various neighbourhoods.ĭiwali always brings back memories we hold dear in our hearts and mind.įor me, my earliest memory of the festival of light is spending the occasion with a young girl I only remember as Romila. ![]() Tomorrow, we celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali.Īnd what a time of celebration it is already shaping up to be.
